The Tolkien Canon
A Canon is the combined works of a writer that have been accepted as authentic: in this case what we term the 'Tolkien Canon'.

We have listed this page as a reference to what is considered to come strictly from the 'Tolkien Canon' This includes The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and The Silmarillion as well as the Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth. Any names or places found in the Map of Mordor and other content here at TLOS.com with this symbol beside them means it comes directly from one of Professor Tolkien's works.

However, since Mordor remains much of a mystery and is veiled in Shadow in the books, we here at the Land of Shadow.com with the greatest care and reverence for the original texts of Professor Tolkien, have expanded on his Mordor by giving names and locations and other content in the spirit of his Land of Shadow. We have also taken into account the films, games and the writings of Christopher Tolkien as well as our own inspirations and interpretations of Mordor. To make a distinction between content taken from the 'Tolkien Canon' Vs that which is based on the 'Expanded Lore of Mordor' we have placed a button on every page in our map and soon all pages in TLOS.com were a Name, Place or Thing is taken directly from the Tolkien's original texts, so it will always be clear were we depart from Tolkien's actual names and locations within his Land of Shadow.

If you see the icon and text below on any page or section on this website you are assured that all written content on that page or section comes directly from the words of J.R.R Tolkien or Christopher Tolkien and no other source.

This icon certifies that all written content on this page adheres to the Tolkien Canon.
